Ways of Reading―How the World Speaks to Us,
How We Speak to the World
November 19 (Thu), 2026 – January 11 (Mon), 2027

This exhibition is held in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. Grounded in the museum’s guiding mission — “to provide a place for creation and coexistence where individuals reflect on themselves and deepen their connections with the world”—it takes “dialogue with the world” as its central theme.
To “read” is an active process: a movement toward the unknown and a deepening of perception. Through the works of five artists from differing periods and creative contexts, the exhibition explores diverse ways of entering into dialogue with the world—by “Reading through Light,” “Reading through Time,” “Reading through Words,” “Reading through Nature,” and “Imagining with the Whole Body.”
The sculptures, photographs, texts, and paintings presented here invite a variety of modes of engagement. In such moments, one may encounter something that quietly sustains one’s own existence.
The key to opening the door to new worlds lies within each individual who approaches the works with openness and quiet attentiveness. It would be our greatest pleasure if this exhibition offers an opportunity to experience this for oneself.
