Masterpieces from the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis

To mark its grand reopening in summer 2012, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum is presenting an exhibition of works from the collection of The Mauritshuis—the prestigious Dutch art museum renowned as “The Royal Picture Gallery.” Featured will be Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring in its premiere Japan appearance. This work, Vermeer’s portrait of a girl gazing over her shoulder, counts among history’s most loved art masterpieces. Six works by Rembrandt will also be displayed alongside Vermeer, including the important work of his later years, Self-Portrait. Also featured—masterpieces by Frans Hals, Van Dyke, Rubens, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and other great masters of 17th century Dutch and Flemish art.
