"Hajimari, Hajimari!"—It’s curtain time! for a nostalgic, slightly spooky exhibition enjoyable for both children and adults. The charm of featured artist Tamana Araki (1970-) is her world view blending a wonky cuteness with spine-chilling sensations. Employing motifs evocative of light and shadow, folk tales, houses, and boats, Araki creates works that arouse nostalgic feelings, sensibilities, and memories deep within us, thereby luring us into an extraordinary world existing beyond our everyday lives.
For this exhibition, along with the prints brimming with poetic sentiment and interactive installations she has displayed until now, Araki will additionally create a large-scale installation inspired by memories layered in the venue’s site, “Ueno.” Through viewing experiences prompted by richly narrative artworks, the exhibition will examine the preciousness of each person’s everyday life.
Many programs for people of all ages, including creative workshops led by the artist and art appreciation programs with art communicators, will be offered during the exhibition period.
This summer, we invite you on a strange and wondrous journey across the border between the ordinary and the extraordinary in the underground space of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. It will be an experience like turning a storybook’s pages one by one. Won’t you join us?
