東京都美術館は、北九州の実業家であった佐藤慶太郎の寄付を受け、1926年に東京府美術館として開館しました。1975年、建物の老朽化と設備拡充の必要性から、前川國男設計による新館、つまり現在の建物が新築され、9月1日にオープンしました。新館開館を機に、美術団体に発表の場を提供するだけでなく、作品収集や企画展の開催など、自主事業が新たに展開されるようになります。新館開館から10年目を迎えた1985年、企画展として、彫刻家、井上武吉の個展が開催されました。正門を入ってすぐのエスプラナードを飾る《my sky hole 85-2 光と影》は、このときの個展に先立つ制作依頼によって生まれ、設置された作品です。今年度の資料展示では、当館が所蔵するアーカイブズ資料を通じて、東京都美術館のシンボルが新たに生み出された当時を振り返ります。

In 1926, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum opened under the name “Tokyo Prefectural Art Museum” on the basis of a donation by the Kyushu industrialist, SATO Keitaro. In 1975, owing to building deterioration and a need for expanded facilities, a new museum building designed by MAYEKAWA Kunio (the present building) was constructed, and the museum reopened on September 1. On that occasion, in addition to its long-established role as a venue for art group exhibitions, the museum embarked on varying new programs of its own, such as collecting artworks and holding special exhibitions. Ten years later, in 1985, the museum featured sculptor INOUE Bukichi in a special solo exhibition. Ahead of the exhibition, Bukichi created and installed the sculpture my sky hole 85-2 light and shadow—now permanently displayed on the Esplanade inside the Main Gate—on a commission from this museum. Through materials from the museum’s archives, this year’s Archive Exhibition will recall the period when this symbol of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum was created.
