Q. On what days is the museum closed?
A. The entire museum closes the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. Special Exhibitions and Thematic Exhibitions close every Monday in principle.
In all cases, when Monday is a national holiday, the museum and its galleries are open that day and closed Tuesday instead. The museum also closes for maintenance and during the New Year’s holidays. Closure periods vary according to the exhibition, so please check our TOP page calendar and social media sites.Close

Q. What time does the museum open?
A. Museum hours are 9:30 – 17:30. Friday hours are 9:30 – 20:00 when a Special Exhibition is in progress.

Q. How do I get to the museum?
A. The closest train stations are “Ueno Station,” served by JR Lines and Tokyo Metro subway lines, and nearby “Keisei Ueno Station.” Walking times are 7 minutes from the “Park Gate” of JR Ueno Station, 10 minutes from “Exit 7” of Tokyo Metro Ginza Line and Hibiya Line, and 10 minutes from Keisei Ueno Station. Q. Is there parking?
A. There is no parking at the museum. Please use the paid-parking areas around Ueno Park.

Q. Can I take notes in the galleries?
A. Taking notes in pencil is allowed, but the use of ballpoint pens, fountain pens and mechanical pencils which may soil or damage artworks is prohibited. If you wish to borrow a pencil, please see staff at the exhibition entrance or in the galleries.Close

Q. Do you have a temporary childcare service?
A. We offer temporary childcare by appointment on established days.

Q. Do you have lockers?
A. Lockers (free; deposit a 100 yen coin which is returned after use) are available in the foyers on the Lobby Floor (LBF). Visit the Floor Map page for locations. The Information counter will make change. Belongings too large for lockers can be checked at the exhibition entrance.Close

Q. Can I borrow a baby stroller?

Q. Do you have breast-feeding room and warm water for milk?

Q. Is exhibition admission free with a Physical Disability Certificate?
A. Admission to Special and Thematic exhibitions is free for visitors (and one accompanying person) with a Physical Disability Certificate, Intellectual Disability Certificate, Rehabilitation Certificate, Mental Disability Certificate, or Atomic Bomb Survivor’s Certificate. Q. Is admission necessary to visit the restaurants and museum shop?
A. Admission is not necessary. Visitors not seeing an exhibition are welcome to use the restaurants and shop. For other admission-free facilities, visit Library and Archives and Sato Keitaro Memorial Lounge.Close

Q. What is the large metal sphere in front of the main gate?
A. A sculpture by Bukichi Inoue entitled my sky hole 85-2. This and other sculptural works in our collection can be seen on the museum grounds and in the museum. For details, visit The Collection page.Close
